Connect Ohio Statement Regarding Columbus’ Smart City Challenge Award

By Amanda Murphy

The City of Columbus, Ohio, has been announced as the awardee of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge and will receive $40 million toward the city’s plan to improve transportation technologies and local mobility. Seattle-based Vulcan Inc. committed an additional $10 million to the winning city, and local Columbus stakeholders have committed an additional $90 million toward making the city’s plan a reality. The City of Columbus residents, businesses, and patrons, are sharing in the excitement of this announcement.

Below is a statement by Stu Johnson, Interim Executive Director for Connect Ohio and Vice President for Connected Nation, Inc.:

“This award is tremendous! Being selected over cities like Austin and San Francisco validates the City of Columbus’s Smart City plan to use technology to improve lives as innovative and further demonstrates a ‘city on the go.’ As an Ohio organization committed to empowering the lives of all people through better access to technology, we know and value the transformative impact that this news holds for individuals and communities across Central Ohio. We congratulate the City of Columbus on receiving this well-deserved Smart City Challenge award, and we look forward to assisting in the effort through our Digital Works program’s partnership with the Columbus Foundation’s Pathways Project and our work with the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Transit Tech Ohio initiative.”
